Top 5 Tips for Trick-Or-Treating

Top 5 Tips for Trick-Or-Treating

Letting your kids head out on their own to trick-or-treat is a big milestone. My husband and I eagerly await the day we can just relax at home handing out candy, but until that day comes, here are my Top 5 Tips for Surviving Halloween.

1. The Candy Tax 🍫

Halloween wouldn't be complete without the classic "candy tax." Give your little trick-or-treaters a heads-up that you'll be collecting your fair share—strictly for “safety inspections,” of course! 😉 I like to claim a solid 10% of the Peanut Butter Cups, but feel free to customize your candy tax to whatever treat you’re craving. It’s the perfect excuse to snag some of their best loot.

2. Costume Backup Plan 🥸

If you’ve ever had a child meltdown five minutes before trick-or-treating because they suddenly hate their costume, you know the value of a backup plan. Kids can be unpredictable, changing their minds last minute, so I always have a second costume on standby. That way, when your little superhero decides they want to be a dinosaur-princess hybrid, you’ll be ready to save the day.

3. Ban on Accessories ⚔️

Here’s a lesson learned the hard way: no costume accessories. Sure, that sword, wand, or broom looks fun when they try it on, but trust me — you’ll be the one carrying it halfway through the night. If they can’t wear it, they don’t need it. This simple rule will save you a lot of hassle!

4. Trick-or-Treat with Friends 👭

Halloween is more fun when shared with friends. Gather a group of kids and parents to trick-or-treat together. It not only makes the evening more enjoyable but also lightens the load on you. Plus, you’ll have plenty of opportunities for fun photos that you can use when they’re older & the yearbook wants a flashback photo. Memories like these are what make Halloween special.

5. Be Prepared 🛞

Trust me, a wagon is a game-changer. It’s perfect for storing all the extras you didn’t think you’d need (like accessories, jackets, and candy overflow). Plus, it doubles as a ride for any little ones who can’t keep up. And for the parents? That wagon can also carry your tumbler (check out our spooky drinkware options) filled with a nice adult beverage — because after 392 reminders of “Did you say thank you?” you’ll need it.

Bonus: Soak in the Moment!

Halloween with young kids can be chaotic, but it’s also full of laughter, surprises, and sweet memories. Embrace the madness and have fun with your little ones — they won’t be this small forever!
